the happiest smile
i've ever seen
leaped upon the face
of that dear girl
(that girl who had rocked
back and forth
from fright
all through
the auditions)
the smile leaped,
i say,
the moment she,
having stumbled
most sadly through her piece,
stepped off the stage.
she made the auditions
worth all our toil.
just to see that
?i did it? smile.
