What about using a few broader categories like poetry and prose. Those may be too broad though. If you did use them, you could then define more narrow groupings for each. In the case of poetry you could have haiku, tanka, ballad. In the case of prose you could have play, essay, article.

Grouping them by type may still be a bit vague since each category could contain unrelated topics.

For topic categories, perhaps something like life, family, faith, Christianity, Fundamentalism, Narnia (the broader use of the word), mythology, children's literature, water, sandwiches, and pickles. Just suggestions. ;) I'll ponder it some more. 8o)

I've been struggling with categories for a while too. First of all I am envious of Joy who has the coolest categories besides Miss Ubertati's "kokoro" which I was delighted to see.

I have added categories, changed some and still am not satisfied. But maybe I am thinking of myself too much and not my reader. Your comment got me in the heart Steph. "archives are more about the reader than the author."

I'll think about it some more too.

i think categories should be sufficiently broad. otherwise you end up with endless lists that are more like second titles to each post than a good summarizing description. but that's easier to do if you're like me and only blog about a few things--simplicity and easy organization being twins and all.

i read back through your archives to see what all you normally write about. You blog creative writing stuff, tidbits of interest, directly theological stuff, and stuff about your life.

the broadest categories would be something like exuberance of pen, bits of exuberance, exuberance of Spirit, and life of exuberance. But by far the writing category would be the largest. It's amazing how many genres, forms, and heinz 57's that would defy categorization exist. So that'd be tough to clearly differentiate, but it'd be nice for us readers.

ps
if the description shows when you mouse over the categories that helps clarity and usefulness(like jbo's)
